We rescue, rehabilitate and re-home stray dogs, called “Satos,” from the streets of Puerto Rico. In a post-Hurricane Maria world, our work is crucial; on any given day, we find dogs wandering the beaches, parking lots and abandoned homes of our island. We rescue dogs who are tied up on the side of the road or abandoned at the entrance of our facility. At intake, a large portion of our dogs suffer from skin issues, parasites and heart worm; we immediately get them veterinary care, then help them settle into their new life of rehabilitation in our facility! We have a pool and plenty of grassy, fenced-in areas for our dogs to play in while they heal from their ailments and get used to a life with people. On average, our dogs spend 3-4 months here before they’re ready to move into phase 3: re-homing. Together with our partners, we maintain a 100% adoption rate; we don’t rest until our dogs get the future they deserve!
Meet Daenerys
In 2017, El Faro rescued this tiny momma - she was weak and malnourished, but giving everything she had to her nine puppies. So she became known as the Mother of Dragons. (And all of her puppies were also named after Game of Thrones characters.) El Faro cared for her and her litter, made sure they were comfortable and nourished, and then arranged their transport to NYC where they all soon found their happy homes. Daenerys is now known as Dany, and she is beloved by her big family of parents and human siblings. All nine of her puppies found homes across the tristate area as well - they even recently had a “family reunion” with the entire litter!
we rescue and rehome stray cats too.
they are an important part of our work!

Meet Governor
When Governor was rescued by El Faro, he was bloody, hairless, hurt and blind. His injuries actually caused him to permanently lose sight in one of his eyes. El Faro dedicated time and finances to his recovery; he was nursed back to health and his transportation was arranged to NYC. Now, his name is Leo and he lives in his happily-ever-after home on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. His days consist of cuddles, dog parks, and devoted parents - exactly what El Faro seeks to find for every single one of our dogs.
